Hi
After only 3 1/2 years I'm taking apart a 990 David Brown clutch again. I think I know what went wrong. When I got the inspection cover off I found these two SS pieces in the bottom, they are 1 1/2" long and 7/16" wide. Any ideas what they are for. I only have two but there mite of been more ,but the lower inspection window was left open.

Ken

Hi Ken;
Was it a replacement Clutch assy that you installed? if it was, the flat piece looks like one of the three (3) spacer that they install under each finger and should be removed when the Clutch Assy was bolted back to the Flywheel, (picture is not very clear)

The bottom bit looks like the outer shell of the thrust bearing. The spring i8s from one of the forks.

Yes it was a new replacement pressure plate. Both pieces are the same, one on its side and other one is on its flat.

Hi Ken;
Now that you say that both pieces are the same, i still say that those pieces are from the Clutch Fingers that should have been removed when the Clutch assy was installed, there should be three (3) of them, with the inspection cover off take a good look between the Finger & the outer Clutch cover you may find the other one, is this the only reason that you were going to take it apart? or is there sometning wrong?

The clutch was replaced 3 1/2 years ago. I replaced the pto disc, main disc,pressure plate,release and pilot bearing. Also machined the seperator plate .045" I should of also machined the outer ring of the flywheel to make up for the .045" that was taken off the seperator plate. and if I did leave the clips in it wouldn't of helped. This time the main disc was worn on the pressure plate side. Same side that was worn down to metal last time I took it apart.

Hi Ken;
By leaving those clipe in between the fingers & outer cover would be the same as using the clutch pedal as a rest and causing the main clutch to slip a little, it might be wise to have your pressure plate checked as the springs may have got hot if the clutch disc was slipping + have it adjusted to the proper adjustments,

The pressure plate and seperator plate look good no hot spots everything else but the main disc looks OK. Would the clips not have fallen out as soon as the clutch peddle was pushed in the first time it was running? One other question: which way does the PTO disc go, cone (tapered end) in or cone out.

Hi Ken;
Clips may or not have fallen out right away as they are hooked between the pressure plate and outer cover, PTO Disc tapered end (Longest end) towards the Flywheel.
